Portuguese has two verbs for “to be”: ser (what something is) and estar (how or where something is right now). Both are irregular. The “sounds like” column is a rough English-letter guide, not IPA.
| Pessoa | Ser | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| eu | sou | soh | I am |
| tu | és | esh | you are (informal) |
| ele / ela / o senhor / a senhora | é | eh | he / she is, you are (formal) |
| nós | somos | SOH-moosh | we are |
| eles / elas / os senhores / as senhoras / vocês | são | sow(n) (nasal) | they are, you all are |
| Pessoa | Estar | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| eu | estou | shtoh | I am |
| tu | estás | shtash | you are (informal) |
| ele / ela / o senhor / a senhora | está | shtah | he / she is, you are (formal) |
| nós | estamos | shTAH-moosh | we are |
| eles / elas / os senhores / as senhoras / vocês | estão | shtow(n) (nasal) | they are, you all are |
In everyday speech the first e of estar nearly disappears: (es)tou ótimo, (es)tá tudo bem?
Subject pronouns are often dropped, because the verb ending already tells you who: Sou o Bradley. Estamos atrasados.
