Possessives say whose something is: o meu carro (my car), a tua casa (your house). In Portuguese the possessive agrees with the thing owned, not with the owner.
A man says a minha mãe (my mother): minha is feminine because mãe is feminine, whoever the speaker is.
Each owner has four forms: masculine and feminine, singular and plural (the thing owned).
| Owner | o … (m. sg.) | a … (f. sg.) | os … (m. pl.) | as … (f. pl.) | English |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| eu | o meu | a minha | os meus | as minhas | my / mine |
| tu | o teu | a tua | os teus | as tuas | your (informal) |
| o senhor / a senhora / você | o seu | a sua | os seus | as suas | your (formal) |
| ele | o … dele | a … dele | os … dele | as … dele | his |
| ela | o … dela | a … dela | os … dela | as … dela | her / hers |
| nós | o nosso | a nossa | os nossos | as nossas | our / ours |
| vocês | o vosso | a vossa | os vossos | as vossas | your (plural) |
| eles | o … deles | a … deles | os … deles | as … deles | their (m.) |
| elas | o … delas | a … delas | os … delas | as … delas | their (f.) |
| Filho (m.) | Filha (f.) | Filhos (m. pl.) | Filhas (f. pl.) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| eu | o meu filho | a minha filha | os meus filhos | as minhas filhas |
| tu | o teu filho | a tua filha | os teus filhos | as tuas filhas |
| o senhor / a senhora | o seu filho | a sua filha | os seus filhos | as suas filhas |
| vocês | o vosso filho | a vossa filha | os vossos filhos | as vossas filhas |
In European Portuguese the definite article goes before the possessive: o meu carro, a minha casa, os nossos amigos. Not just meu carro.
These go after the noun and agree with the owner, not the thing:
| Português | English |
|---|---|
| o carro dele | his car |
| a casa dela | her house |
| os filhos deles | their children (owners male or mixed) |
| a escola delas | their school (owners female) |
They come from de + ele/ela: o carro do João → o carro dele.
In everyday pt-PT, seu/sua is mostly the polite “your” for o senhor / a senhora. For “his / her / their”, use dele / dela / deles / delas, which doesn’t leave any doubt.
A senhora tem o seu bilhete? — Do you (madam) have your ticket? O Pedro tem o bilhete dele. — Pedro has his ticket.
For vocês (you all), use vosso / vossa / vossos / vossas: a vossa casa é linda.
The same words work without a noun.
| Português | English |
|---|---|
| Este livro é meu. | This book is mine. |
| A mala é tua? | Is the bag yours? |
| O carro é dele. | The car is his. |
| Os bilhetes são nossos. | The tickets are ours. |
| O meu carro é azul. E o teu? | My car is blue. And yours? |
| A minha casa é pequena, a vossa é grande. | My house is small, yours is big. |
After ser the article is usually dropped (é meu). When it stands in for a noun, keep the article (e o teu?).
Because the article is there, it contracts with de, em, a, por:
| Preposition + article | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| de + o = do | a casa do meu pai | my father’s house |
| de + a = da | Gosto da minha professora. | I like my teacher. |
| em + o = no | Está no teu quarto. | It’s in your bedroom. |
| em + a = na | Moro na nossa casa. | I live in our house. |
| a + o = ao | Dei o livro ao meu irmão. | I gave the book to my brother. |
| a + a = à | Telefono à minha mãe. | I phone my mother. |
| por + o = pelo | Espero pelo meu amigo. | I’m waiting for my friend. |
