How to count in European Portuguese: cardinal numbers (um, dois, três…) and ordinal numbers (primeiro, segundo, terceiro…). Spellings follow pt-PT after the 1990 Acordo Ortográfico. The “sounds like” column is a rough English-letter guide based on my notes (2026-10-07), not IPA.

| # | Português |
|---|---|
| 1 000 | mil (never um mil) |
| 2 000 | dois mil |
| 10 000 | dez mil |
| 100 000 | cem mil |
| 1 000 000 | um milhão |
| 2 000 000 | dois milhões |
| 1 000 000 000 | mil milhões (pt-PT “billion”) |
In pt-PT, um bilião = 10¹² (a million million). An English “billion” is mil milhões.
The “e” after mil: put e before the last group only when that group is under 100 or a round hundred. Otherwise no e.
| # | Português | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 001 | mil e um | last group < 100 |
| 1 050 | mil e cinquenta | last group < 100 |
| 1 100 | mil e cem | round hundred |
| 1 200 | mil e duzentos | round hundred |
| 1 250 | mil duzentos e cinquenta | not round → no e after mil |
| 2026 | dois mil e vinte e seis | last group < 100 |
| 1 500 000 | um milhão e quinhentos mil | round hundred (thousands) |
Writing numbers: pt-PT uses a comma for decimals and a space (or point) for thousands:
1 250,50 € = mil duzentos e cinquenta euros e cinquenta cêntimos.
Only 1, 2 and the hundreds 200–900 change. Everything else stays the same.

This matters a lot for telling the time (hora is feminine): é uma hora, são duas horas.

Ordinals are adjectives: they agree in gender and number (-o / -a / -os / -as).
