Os interrogativos (pt-PT)

Question words: quem? (who?), onde? (where?), quando? (when?)… Matches the “questions” section of my notes (2026-10-15/16) and the Wordwall interrogativos exercises.

1. The question words

Português English Example English
Que …? / O que …? What …? O que fazes? What do you do?
O quê? What? (on its own / at the end) Disseste o quê? You said what?
Quem? Who? Quem é a tua professora? Who is your teacher?
Qual? / Quais? Which? / What? Qual é o teu nome? What is your name?
Onde? Where? Onde moras? Where do you live?
Quando? When? Quando é a festa? When is the party?
Como? How? Como te chamas? What’s your name? (lit. how do you call yourself?)
Porque …? / Porquê? Why? Porque estudas português? Why do you study Portuguese?
Quanto? / Quanta? How much? Quanto custa? How much does it cost?
Quantos? / Quantas? How many? Quantos anos tens? How old are you?
De quem? Whose? De quem é este livro? Whose book is this?

2. Questions with é que (very common in pt-PT)

In speech, the Portuguese often put é que after the question word. It doesn’t change the meaning, and the word order stays like a normal sentence (subject before verb):

Without é que With é que English
Onde moras? Onde é que moras? Where do you live?
Onde dorme o menino? Onde é que o menino dorme? Where does the boy sleep?
Quando vão à escola? Quando é que os meninos vão à escola? When do the children go to school?
O que queres? O que é que queres? What do you want?
Qual serve para comer? Qual é que serve para comer? Which one is for eating?
Porque estás triste? Porque é que estás triste? Why are you sad?

3. Tricky pairs

Que / o que vs o quê

Que vs qual

Porque vs porquê (why / because)

Form Where Example
Porque … ? starting a question Porque chegaste tarde? / Porque é que chegaste tarde?
Porquê? alone or at the end Chegaste tarde porquê? — Porquê?
porque … answer: “because” Porque perdi o autocarro.
o porquê noun: “the reason” Não sei o porquê.

Quanto agrees with the noun

Masculino Feminino
singular (how much) Quanto dinheiro? Quanta água?
plural (how many) Quantos irmãos tens? Quantas horas trabalhas?

Quanto custa? / Quanto é? — How much is it? (no noun → quanto)

Onde with prepositions

Português English Example
Onde? where (is / are) Onde está o carro? — Na garagem.
De onde? where from De onde és? — Sou de Inglaterra.
Para onde? where to Para onde vais? — Vou para casa.
Aonde? where to (with ir) Aonde vais?
Por onde? which way Por onde vamos?

4. Prepositions come first

In Portuguese the preposition goes before the question word. It never ends the sentence like English “Who are you talking to?”.

Português English
Com quem vives? Who do you live with?
De quem é a mala? Whose bag is it?
Para quem é o presente? Who is the present for?
A que horas começa a aula? What time does the class start?
Desde quando moras em Lisboa? Since when have you lived in Lisbon?
Há quanto tempo estudas português? How long have you been studying Portuguese?
De que gostas? / Do que gostas? What do you like?
Em que trabalhas? What do you do for a living?

5. Yes / no questions: no question word

Just use a normal sentence and raise your voice at the end. The word order doesn’t change.

Tag questions: add não é? or pois não? — Está frio, não é? (It’s cold, isn’t it?)

Answer by repeating the verb, not just sim: Falas português? — Falo, um pouco.

6. Everyday questions
